Confident, Curious, and Capable

Our Middle School program (grades 5-8) offers a comprehensive and dynamic curriculum that includes history, language arts, math, science, Spanish, physical education, art, music, and a range of electives for grades 5-8. Students thrive in an academically challenging environment that honors each individual's strengths, provides tailored support for all learning styles, and fosters a sense of curiosity.

While the curriculum is rooted in Maryland State Standards, it is designed to go deeper, providing students with a more expansive understanding of the subjects they explore. It is responsive to student interests and fosters a project- and inquiry-based approach to learning. With strong support for all types of learners, we gradually increase academic challenges as students progress through the grades.

From Exploration to Advanced Study

The program begins with a carefully designed 5th grade experience that acts as a bridge between primary school to middle school, helping students transition smoothly to the expectations of our challenging academic program. As students progress through the grades, they build stamina and resilience, as they develop self-awareness and independence.

Leadership opportunities become more frequent and to ensure the greatest opportunity for personal growth. Throughout the program, frequent field trips—ranging from local walking excursions to visits to metropolitan areas—enhance classroom learning and provide students with diverse experiences.

In 8th grade, students have the chance to take high school-level courses such as Algebra and advanced Spanish, setting a strong foundation for future academic success.

Leadership, Empathy, and Global Awareness

The 8th-grade year culminates in a year-long Capstone research project, allowing students to engage in deep inquiry while developing critical thinking and research skills. A special multi-day travel experience allows students the opportunity to apply their education to real-world settings.

The Middle School program creates a sense of belonging, while valuing the unique qualities of each student. We foster the development of empathy and global awareness to prepare our students for an interconnected world. Leadership, collaboration, and the celebration of diverse perspectives are key components of our program, ensuring that students graduate as confident, compassionate, and capable individuals ready for the next step in their academic journey.

STUDIO B

STUDIO B at The Banner School is a dedicated time for middle school students to engage in structured, project-based learning that fosters creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Through guided choice and interdisciplinary exploration, students develop essential skills while pursuing meaningful challenges that reflect their interests and strengths. This weekly program supports Banner’s commitment to inquiry-driven education and empowers students to use the design thinking process to build, brainstorm, and become.

This is a midweek innovation program where students choose their own learning path from a variety of hands-on activities or individually designed projects. A few of these options include: STEM Lab, Yearbook Class, Horticulture, Study Skills, and Book Club.
